Yellow Economic Circle 黃店經濟圈

Since the anti Extradition Bill movement in 2019, pro-democracy supporters has had enough of HK government/CCP suppression and applying pressure against businesses for staying politically neutral. As a counter attack, they have banded together to support businesses with like-minded political stance.

Many businesses have penalized employees that have out-spoken political views, blue or yellow. There are also companies like Cathay Pacific or even Hospital Authority that has reprimanded or persuaded their employees against supporting the movement. Not to mention MTR, a state-majority owned company, and the highest profiting public transport system, had done things from canceling certain routes from public use to facilitate police action to posting arbitrary “not in use due to vandalism” signs on certain ticketing machines (as opposed to their regular “not in use” signs for reduce consumption).

Once again, it’s the age old question of whether it’s “right” to force businesses to take a political stance? How is this different from what the CCP/HK government have been doing? And how effective is this against targeting large corporations, and if in the end, it’s probably the small businesses that take the hardest hit. How much of it is the companies values, and whether a company has the power to limit its employees from freedom of expression?

I can’t vouch for ethical values or the effectiveness of this action, but it’s amazing how Hong Kongers have weaponize purchasing power!
